Workshop on ns-3

Program

New:  Final technical program available here

Scope

The Workshop on ns-3 is a one day workshop held in conjuction with the Second International Conference on Simulation Tools and Techniques (SIMUTools 2009). The workshop will take place on March 2nd, 2009 in Rome, Italy.

ns-3 is a discrete event network simulation tool being developed as an open source project. ns-3 is intended to become the successor of the popular ns-2 simulator. In 2008, ns-3 made its first stable releases, and early users have already published papers using the tool. ns-3 is oriented towards current network research priorities such as improving the linkage between simulation, virtual machine environments, and testbeds.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide both a tutorial on ns-3 and an opportunity to see examples of simulation projects being conducted with ns-3. We are not soliciting full papers on ns-3 or its usage, opting instead for a workshop program that emphasizes more interaction and discussion. We are soliciting requests for brief talks, posters, or demonstrations. Participants to this portion of the workshop are requested to submit a short abstract of the intended presentation, and we will accept as many as possible that conform to the scope outlined below. Full papers should be submitted to the SIMUTools main conference track (deadline October 19, 2008). Posters or brief summaries of talks accepted to the main SIMUTools track are also welcome.

The workshop is planned to consist of a half-day introductory overview or tutorial on ns-3, with guided examples. The second half day of the workshop will consist of any accepted talks or demos, and will be otherwise filled with more tutorial time and introduction of advanced features or current development efforts with the simulator. At the end of the day, attendees should have a basic sense for what is possible to do with ns-3, what others are currently doing with ns-3, and how to get more information and help on becoming an ns-3 user.

The scope for abstracts includes the following topics. Note that proposers do not have to have prior experience with ns-3 (e.g. a talk on what a user would like to see developed in ns3 is acceptable); the main scope is that the abstract should focus on advancing ns-3 in some way:

  • Requirements or suggestions for ns-3 design (e.g., proposals for new capabilities to make it more useful)
  • Use cases for ns-3
  • Frameworks or techniques for managing independent replications and/or simulation output
  • Integration aspects; how to integrate or use ns-3 with other tools or data input formats
  • Parallel simulation or other structural enhancements
  • Use of ns-3 with hardware (or virtual machines) "in the loop"
  • New or extended simulation models for ns-3
  • Debugging and developer environments for ns-3
  • Feedback on using or trying out ns-3 (or even ns-2)
